A Summer Retreat Off Cape Cod
The charming island of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, also known as The Vineyard, is a famous summer colony situated south of Cape Cod on the Atlantic Ocean. Popular with keeping low-profile celebrities, the island is a perfect destination for beach relaxation, fishing trips and hiking the cliffs.
Accessible only by planes and boats, Martha’s Vineyard is a peaceful oasis, where one can truly rest in a no-fuss atmosphere and fantastic summer weather. You can start your Vineyard experience in Oak Bluffs, town in the north-east part of the island, known for its Victorian-style cottages and a beautiful harbour.
West from Oak Bluffs, there is Vineyard Haven, the main entry port of the island and during summer, one of its most populous tourist destinations. There you can rent a 4x4 and drive to see the Vineyard’s lighthouses, including the Gay Head Lighthouse in Aquinnah located next to the cliffs going by the same name.
Other island activities include horseback riding, cycling, golfing and, of course, sailing. You can practice the latter in Martha’s Vineyard’s town of Edgartown, an old whaling port and the location for the filming of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws.

The porch had rocking chairs and loved sitting there with a cup of tea listening to birds and reading books about Martha’s Vinyard history. We were lucky to have breakfast out on the porch before weather changed. Our room was small but had everything we needed, a comfortable bed, the best mattress i slept in a hotel and a very good shower. Loved the decor, we instantly relaxed and felt the peace in that place. Breakfast was so tasty, with choice of boiled eggs, delicious freshly baked muffins and fruit. Special thanks to Omar who looked after us and cooked most delicious scrambled eggs. He has such a calming and reassuring nature. We were caught in the storm from Atlantic which hit the island. Omar was so helpful trying to find out information and call the ferry company for us. We loved the history, charm and beautiful people who make this island so special. On our arrival the manager noticed we had quite a bit of luggage and changed our booking to a floor level cabin so we didn't have to drag our luggage up any stairs. The cabin was beautiful!, clean and had all the amenities that we needed. The staff were lovely and friendly, they went out of their way to greet you and to speak to you. If you want to visit the other two towns (Edgartown, and Vineyard Haven or just see the island- bus transportation is available and FREE to those traveling without a car! There are a lot of things to see and do on the Island.
There are a lot of things to see and do on the Island. We were there for a wedding and stayed 3 days, but we could have stayed a few more in order to take in the Edgartown side of the Island. Oak Bluffs has something for everyone. Lots of great restaurants, the Flying Carousel for families, a beautiful Town Common to sit and enjoy the sites. Lots of lovely homes with gorgeous gardens. The people are very friendly and quite helpful! It's a beautiful everywhere! The Gingerbread Houses were spectacular! The food was superb. I bought the most delicious potpie I've ever had at a nearby farm store that I wish I could remember the name of. I also had the most moist and crunchy cod fish and chips ever. This was my very first trip to the island (that's why I can't remember the names, but I stayed at The Frankin Hotel Martha Vineyard, which everything was within walking distance from everything and I'll be returning throughout the new year and I plan on staying in Edgartown!!! A very comfortable older home off the main road. Woodsy feeling which was nice and a very private yard. Not close to beaches and a bit of a drive to the closest town.
