FAQs about hotels in Alentejo
Castles, Cliffs and Countryside
Sleepy Alentejo is an agricultural region of rolling hills and cork plantations, south of the Tagus River. Many of the Booking.com accommodation options are Alentejo guest houses featuring traditional wooden beds with painted headboards.
The main city is historic Évora with its medieval cathedral, partly intact walls and remains of a Roman temple. There are also Roman remnants in Beja, with its hilltop castle and whitewashed houses, and Serpa, whose aqueduct forms part of the city walls.
Mértola is nestled in the Guadiana Valley Natural Park, while Portalegre is the gateway to the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. Also here are beautiful Marvão, set on a steep escarpment and guarded by a castle, and Castelo de Vide whose castle is on a less-pronounced hill.
The South-West Alentejo and Vicentine Natural Park is on Portugal’s west coast and many Alentejo beach hotels are found in Vila Nova de Milfontes and nearby Zambujeira do Mar, on a clifftop reminiscent of the Algarve.
By the Spain border, hilltop Monsaraz is partly enclosed by walls of a castle overlooking Alqueva Lake, formed by the dam downstream. Across the lake is the castle of Mourão, while to the north is Estremoz, known for colourful marble. East is UNESCO World Heritage-listed Elvas, whose 6 km aqueduct and 2 star-shaped forts are quite a sight.

- Scored out of 10, guest rating 8.6Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 1,913 reviewsIt was our first time glamping and we loved it! We were staying in one of the little houses near the restaurant with our 2 year old daughter. The resort was beautiful with various amenities and activities for families with children or couples. We enjoyed the indoor pool, childrens playgrounds and parks nature. Great breakfast basket was delivered to our house every morning and we enjoyed the food with a beautiful view over the hills and the sunset in the evening. The little house was very clean and had everything one needs including a nice bathroom. The balcony was very spacious and nice. The stuff was very friendly and helpful! The resort location is quite and remote and the beautiful beaches are reachable with car in ca 20min. Overall we had a great time and would come back anytime.Guest review byMartinaSwitzerland
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 7.1Good - What previous guests thought, 1,231 reviewsWhat a delightful experience! The breakfast spread was both delicious and diverse, offering something for everyone. The highlight, of course, was the stunning beach - simply paradise. The path to the beach was a welcome shortcut, leading to a breathtaking beach that our family adored. Our kids had a blast at the pools, and there were plenty of free activities for them to enjoy. The shorter path to the beach added convenience to our stay, and we couldn't have asked for a better time. The ferry trip and dolphin watching were unforgettable. Despite some minor hiccups, we'd definitely return! There was even a foam party!!Guest review byYaraGermany
- From £144.95 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.0Superb - What previous guests thought, 262 reviewsBeautiful calm and relaxing place. Pet friendly with a bed and bowls provided for your fury friends. Delicious and varied breakfast and if you want you can have it served in your room at no extra cost (ideal privacy for us as staying with a baby and a dog). The rest of the food on the a la carte menu is also amazing. Great WiFi connection despite looking like you're in the middle of nowhere. The whole area is huge and there's plenty of walking space if you fancy a morning or evening walk alongside the vineyards.Guest review byBiancaUnited Kingdom

Evora has plenty of history both culturally and gastronomically. Wonderful stuff. The inner city is small and very accessible by foot. I do not recommend driving within the walls. We were lucky to access a location to stay that was very close to public parking just outside the walls. Find locations to eat in side streets, they’re much more intimate and authentic. We settled on Baiuca, husband and wife that served and cooked.Guest review byChristopher - 10.0

Great little town that provides good access up and down the west coast of Portugal. The beach nearby or on the other side of the river is excellent for a relaxed day and the town itself has a good number of restaurants/cafes etc. You can: - spend time at the beach - explore the coast (by car or walking) - paddleboard, kayak etc along the river - wander the town stopping at cafes/gelaterias/restaurants - all of the aboveGuest review bySapanUnited Kingdom - 10.0

The place is authentic and the castle perhaps the best in Portugal, not too big or overwhelming. Then there are the historic walls, a history lovers paradise. And don't forget the food, first rate. This is the "real" untouched Portugal.Guest review byIanCanada - 10.0

Sines is a great starting spot to explore both the super-long pretty much unbroken beach to the north that goes all the way to Troia, and the small pictoresque "cove" beaches to the south of Sines. The town is a bit rugged, and definitely not a fancy place, but so much more authentic for it. I guess it's pretty far down the perfect-spot tourist ladder and that's frankly absolutely great.Guest review byMartinCzech Republic - 10.0

It was low season and there was not much going on. It appears that apart from the beach and one golf club there is not so much to be done in Troia. There were a few restaurants but not that many. Supermarket in the village was extremely, expensiveGuest review byIrmgardPortugal - 10.0

Lovely hostess, fabulous location high up so we enjoyed the sunset. Apartment was very clean & well equipped, large, comfortable bed. Wifi very strong. Nice luxury whilst walking 12 days of the Fisherman's trail. Beware the Mercado in the town was closed at 3.30 so we purchased sardines, cheese & wine fir our dinner at the apartment as it us 2.5km out of townGuest review byKerrie - 10.0

It took longer to retrieve our rental car from Lisbon than we expected, and we stopped in Evora on our way to Monsaraz. We arrived late and left in the morning, leaving little time to explore. A full day is probably enough, which we intended to have but misjudged the time navigating the transportation. Driving through town was an adventure with the very narrow and steep streets. The restaurant was very traditional, and felt authentic. We would recommend a stop in this charming old town.Guest review byMarcie - 8.0
