FAQs about hotels in Umbria
Hilltop Towns Ringing with Music
One of Italy’s smallest regions, fabulous Umbria has stunning hilltop towns, rolling vineyards and magnificent architecture to rival its more famous neighbour Tuscany.
The capital Perugia is a university town whose cobbled centre houses medieval art, steep streets and shops selling locally made chocolate. It also hosts a jazz festival, while the annual Festival of the Two Worlds is in Spoleto, a town with a hilltop castle and well-preserved Roman theatre.
Remains of a Roman theatre are also in walled Gubbio, one of Italy’s best-preserved medieval towns. North-east, Città di Castello has excellent galleries and a church visible for miles around. The same is true of the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, dedicated to the saint who lived in poverty. Ironically, this hillside town has one of the few 5-star Umbria hotels.
Foligno has a peaceful river and further south Terni is near the multi-level Marmore waterfalls. Orvieto on a sheer escarpment to the north-west houses the jewel in the Umbrian crown – a fantastic cathedral with a gold-mosaic façade.
To the north, jutting into Lake Trasimeno on a piece of land that was once an island, is Castiglione del Lago. In the east, tranquil Norcia in the foothills of the Monti Sibillini National Park houses some of the many Umbria hotels in the countryside on Booking.com.

We only spent one night in Assisi which gave us 24 hours to visit and see the sights. My only regret is that we didn’t stay an extra night as I would have liked an extra day to shop and enjoy the town ambiance.Guest review byStephen - 10.0

There was nothing to dislike but older people like us should wear sensible shoes. Most areas are cobbled but it is part of the history. We were at a wedding 25 mins fro Perugia but lunch outside are hotel was great with wonderful views Easy to get round no buses. We are both 83 so not young and I couldn't see any activities .It was for peole to see what it was like in the 1400's plusGuest review byAnonymousUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Orvieto is a beautiful, historic city on a high outcrop.
Orvieto is a beautiful, historic city on a high outcrop. There are some great restaurants, and interesting sites to see. We recommend Al Pozzo Etrusco Di Fabrizio Grilli for excellent local dishes. It's worth booking as it isn't very big. There's a walk around the bottom of the cliff - steep and gravelly in parts, but lovely views.Guest review bySusanUnited Kingdom - 8.0

A small historic centre on a hillside, with beautiful scenery and cute streets. A great place to sit and watch the world go by. There are a good few interesting historical sites to visit right the the town centre, which is very easy to reach from the train station. It has great places to eat including Osteria del Matto (fixed menu with great freshly cooked, food, but not suitable for vegetarians) and Contrasti Cucina e Ozio, with a high-quality menu and still reasonable prices. La Bottega is wonderful for a glass of wine with quality local salumi, cheese or porchetta. There are really handy underground moving walkways to help you up or down the steep streets and shade you from the hot weather. The bars in the main square offer small aperitivo included in the price of a drink at all times of the day. There is a lot of construction right now(summer 2025) to upgrade older buildings , but I'm sure this will only improve the town.Guest review bySineadItaly - 10.0

The quintessential Italian village -- so much history with beautiful cobblestone streets, amazing cafes and quaint shops. We were there for a family baptism and every venue accommodated our large groups with advance planning. Completely gracious and wonderful -- I will definitely return. It's a hidden gem.Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

Terni is a wonderful city.
Terni is a wonderful city. In my opinion it's a hidden gem of Italy. It's an easy 1-hour train ride from Rome, and on the way to all the northern Italian cities. Terni Centro has almost no cars, so incredibly walking friendly, full of cafes, gelaterias, and pizza. All, with picture book old Italian architecture. Also, Terni really comes alive after 4pm!Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

Passignano sul Trasimeno is a charming lakeside town in Umbria offering breathtaking views, authentic Italian culture, and a peaceful atmosphere away from tourist crowds. With its medieval fortress, waterfront promenade, excellent local cuisine, and perfect location for exploring the Umbrian countryside, it's an ideal destination for travelers seeking a genuine Italian experience and great tradition like Palio Delle Barche.Guest review byGrzegorzPoland - 10.0
We stayed one night.
We stayed one night. Julia, the hostess, was outstandingly helpful and she spoke very good English. The dinner and breakfast were particularly good. We ate dinner outdoors but in good shade from the evening sun. There is a large swimming pool which has a superb view. I highly recommend Romitorio agriturismo.Guest review byPaulUnited Kingdom - 6.0

If you're religious and want to see Cascia and St Rita's birthplace nearby then come or if interested in art history and St Rita's basilica and monastery next door. If driving it's a nice way to pass a morning or afternoon. Not much else to keep you there but scenery roundabout is stunning! We took a taxi organized by hotel and spent an hour or two around her birthplace village -magical views and you can climb up hill to mountain top church!Guest review byMaryUnited Kingdom
