We had a very nice stay for two nights at Royal Hotel! When calling the receptionist and telling that we would arrive late she arranged with the staff in the restaurant so they stayed overtime to serve a delicious meal. The restaurant served us very good cooked breakfasts as well as dinners. The housekeeper Bertie was very helpful taking care of our laundry. We had a nice room with good view over the harbour and castle Lewis. Göran and Andreas

What a wee gem of a place! Shona was so friendly and kind. Breakfast was delicious, decor gorgeous. Beds were comfy and location is great (right in town, across from ferry, close to everything). Owners were so sweet, they even gave me a hot water bottle when I'd made myself too cold walking in the rain. I will 100% stay here again next time I'm in stornoway.

Christina came to meet us at the door and was so gracious and welcoming. The whole team there took such good care of us and made a difficult trip (bereavement) much more bareable. The room was so comfortable and decorated beautifully. There's a fully accessible bathroom and lift too which is great and the bed is perfect. The castle has been restored so well and looks gorgeous inside and out. Really recommend having a walk around the castle grounds while you're staying too. The café staff were super friendly and took our drinks to the guest lounge for us when we had family visiting. The food is really nice and they make good hot drinks and the tablet they sell is delicious. They will try their best to help you. We even got invited to watch a fashion show which was cool. Really can't recommend this place enough and we'll definitely stay again next time we're on the island. Everyone clearly loves what they're doing and it really shows. Plus, it's a castle! The place to be in Stornoway. A few minutes drive from the city center in a very scenic place overlooking the bay. Felt like home immediately. The rooms were big and very cosy with a lot of storage. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare our breakfasts and dinners. We were pleasantly surprised to find fresh breakfast goodies in the fridge which was a nice touch. All in all an amazing place and a great team who were responsive and nice. Highly recommend.

An amazing view, extraordinary location, excellent breakfast and dinner; the whole property is set up, managed and cared for with a significant attention to detail to make it a truly unique experience, from the details in the room, the amenities, the setup of the room, to the setup of the wonderful lounge with a truly breathtakingly beautiful view! The owners spare no efforts to ensure a luxury stay.

Stornoway is a busy wee town full of independent shops. I particularly like An Taigh Ceilidh where you are encouraged to practise your Gàidhlig. Only downside there are a few one-way streets which are confusing / frustrating if you don't know where you're going.

This review is more about Lewis and Harris, Sandwick is a small suburb of Stornaway. It has an interesting memorial to HMS Iolaire. We spent 4 nights on the island. Although the weather was pretty awful, the island is lovely and we spent a fair bit of time touring Lewis and Harris. The Butt of Lewis is nice and there is a lovely walk to Eoropie bay with lovely sandy beach. We are interested in birds and found Red necked Phalorope, GND, Red throated Diver, Golden Eagle, Guillemots, Fulmars etc. Take the drive across Pentland Road it is lovely and good for birds. Sadly we didn't really have raptor weather (lots of rain). Stornaway is a bit limited - if you want to dine out book well ahead as there aren't many places and they fill up quickly. We enjoyed the Boatshed at the Royal Hotel for dinner. EVERYTHING closes on Sunday (including most of the petrol stations so beware).

Uig is full of lovely walks and beaches, and there is plenty of wildlife, we got views of white tailed eagles, and seals. Seatrek located nearby was fantastic, offering trips around the lagoon and out to the natural arches.

A stunningly beautiful area, used it as a base to explore the whole of Lewis and Harris. Lots of single track roads which give the passenger lots of time to take in the stunning views. The roads are very quiet, and everyone is courteous and gives way in the plentiful passing places. You'll get friendly waves when you give way. I would love to come again and spend more time just enjoying the views and the birdsong. Highly recommend the Ravenspoint Visitor Centre - wildlife watching, self-service cafe where you pay a donation, lovely museum of local life, staffed by friendly and very informative volunteers.

We loved our accommodation at Coleil Cottage and the area in general. It was a good base for travelling to the North or South of the island. Being next to the coast, it was a great area for whale and dolphin watching. There were many wild birds, including cuckoos and even rabbits and chickens in our garden.

There’s not much to see and do in Stornoway but it is an excellent base for exploring Lewis and Harris. It was easy to reach the main tourist spots of Ness, Callanish, Carloway and Gearrannan Blackhouse Village. Also not far to experience the stunning scenery of Harris including the famous Luskentyre Beach. In Stornoway itself, the walk to the Iolaire Monument and the visit to the Lewis Castle Museum were both worth doing. The best place for lunch was Lantair.

Sandwick was pretty quiet but it was just outside of Stornoway which was good enough for us as the property was nice and cosy. Most of the sights we went to see was out with sandwick, more stornoway and further afield. So I’m not reviewing sandwick. The property location was fine for us to travel to and from what we wanted to see
