FAQs about hotels in Somme
Rural Region With a Sombre Side
Although forever to be remembered for a horrific World War I battle, the Somme has returned to the sleepy rural region that it once was before being ravaged by war.
The Somme River, which it is centred on, enters the English Channel at a delta between the pretty medieval village of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme and Le Crotoy with its sweeping beach.
This part of the Picardy coastline is popular for relaxing France beach holidays amid unspoilt nature. The marshy terrain attracts rich birdlife, and seals bask on beaches between Mers-les-Bains and Fort-Mahon-Plage, just 2 resorts offering Somme Bay hotels on Booking.com.
Of course, the region’s more sombreing side should not be forgotten, and evidently it is not. The many immaculately tended war cemeteries are fitting tributes to the thousands of men who lost their lives. At the centre of the battlefields, small Albert is surrounded by Somme cemeteries and remembrances, including the poignant Memorial to the Missing in Thiepval. Amongst its reminders, Péronne has the Story of the Great War Museum within a 13th-century castle.
Most Somme hotels are in Amiens where a grand 13th-century cathedral towers above colourful waterfront cafés and river island gardens. Hundreds more islands are in the river between here and Abbeville, a town which suffered greatly through war, although 15th-century St Vulfran’s Church remained largely unscathed.

- Scored out of 10, guest rating 7.0Good - What previous guests thought, 672 reviewsThe area is gorgeous, with natural reserves, long empty (stone or sand) beaches, seadogs, cliffs, forests, hiking paths... We liked also visiting villages like Mers-les-Bains, Saint-Valery-sur-Somme et Le Tréport. In Cayeux-sur-Mer there's a really good bakery, nice closed market (3 days/ week) and bars (L'Embuscade near the market, and two at the beach). Madame Vacances was perfect to visit all this. Really friendly staff and nice well-equipped tiny apartment at the beach front. We couldn't make use of the swimming pool (because under renovations most week), but in any case it's tiny and best for children. We asked for the WiFi code for the rooms because the free WiFi at the lounge didn't connect well and this was perfect for us (as we had to work a bit during the week).Guest review byEmanuelaBelgium
- From £154.50 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.1Very good - What previous guests thought, 1,568 reviewsOur room was huge and the bathroom big enough for a party. Would be excellent for people with mobility issues. Enough pillows for a change. Well done. The lovely pool was just the right temperature and sheltered by a hedge which helped with the wind. Was not there long enough to really see what was on offer. Lovely little terrace to sit and look at all the nature about including the sweet little horses.Guest review byBillAustralia

I used Amiens as a base to visit important historical sites in surrounding towns and villages. The Cathedral is the largest Gothic construction. The parks and canal boat tour is recommended. Although in France the cradle of gastronomic food, I also enjoyed Turkish food on offer not far from the B&B. Well priced and fresh, meat done on charcoal.Guest review byDouglasAustralia - 10.0

Abbeville is a hidden French gem, close to everything .
Abbeville is a hidden French gem, close to everything . Near beaches, war memorials ( battle of the Somme ) chateau's to see and the shopping is great. People are friendly. Lots of money has poured into Picardie due to Macron and this being his home area. Paris is close and so is Amiens and its canals and catherdrals. Abbeville has stunning old streets and houses and beautiful Catherdral. A well kept secretGuest review byMichelleUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Le Crotoy is a village we have been coming to for many years. It is a perfect holiday destination with excellent beaches, bars and restaurants. Hotels are good, in particular Les Tourelles and there are many small towns worth visiting. The steam railway to St Vallery and Cayeux is well worth doing. There is a market every day of the week in a nearby town. If you like fish this is the place to come to.Guest review byroyUnited Kingdom - 10.0

It was in open environment free of traffic and congestion. Friendly area. Arrived late in the evening and their hotel was closing at 11pm. So popped around the corner to McDonald’s around the corner. Hotel was a ground floor room with direct access from outside. Able to park my motorbike outside my room safe and secure. Outside gates locked at 11pm. Ease of mind.Guest review bytoqir - 10.0
The hotel was fabulous.
The hotel was fabulous. Excellent accommodation and really good food. Couldn't ask for more. The hotel is located some 2 - 3 miles outside of Ault in a pretty village on to a small beach surrounded by cliffs. Easy access with good parking facilites. The nearby town of Ault is a small and quiet place with beach and Casino. We were out of season so very little open, but good local population out enjoying life.Guest review byRonaUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Excellent WW1 Museum at the Chateau.
Excellent WW1 Museum at the Chateau. Peronne has had its share of adversity during Medieval times and during the WW1 when it was behind the German lines in the centre of the Somme offensive. There are also some very pleasant walking routes around the lakes formed by the River Somme which we unfortunately had no time to explore.Guest review byJohnFrance - 8.0
Around the train station, Amiens was rather ordinary.
Around the train station, Amiens was rather ordinary. I was surprised by the giant awning over the plaza near the hotel. Walking north to the centre of town gave a little more charm. The Cathedral is majestic and imposing. Going further north, the Somme river is gorgeous, with the 'quai' restaurants. South of the Cathedral is the Musée de Picardie - a must see with three levels - prehistoric, medieval and recent past, chock-full of artefacts and information. Many gaulish and roman coins, dinosaur bones, statues and busts, and truly beautiful paintings to rival those in the Louvres.Guest review byFromagerFrance - 10.0
This is a very pretty place, right by the river.
This is a very pretty place, right by the river. There are numerous restaurants and some lovely little shops. Many of the streets are very attractive, with wonderful buildings and fauna and flora to admire. There is a long promenade for easy walking and a beach and park at one end, suitable for families. I would highly recommend a visit.Guest review byTINAUnited Kingdom
