Walking the dam itself is a great experience, but the photo opportunities on the Arizona side are worth a few minutes' drive. Its nice early morning because not crowded, almost all to yourself. Do NOT pay for the garage unless you are rich or disabled. Drive ACROSS the dam and up the hill - free parking at hilltop across the AZ state border with ncie views. Don't let Nevada rip you off! There used to be a lovely red rock view road continuing east of the Dam road but now our wonderful govt has closed it off with barriers so you cannot enjoy it. The size of this dam is amazing.
The size of this dam is amazing. Right now, the tours are closed, but highly recommended once they restart. You can get excellent views of the dam and Lake Meade from the new bypass bridge, which has access for foot traffic. But, it can be VERY windy. I mean like "pull your cell phone out of your hand" windy. Still, I highly recommend the walk. However, you cannot see the dam or lake from the bridge if you are driving over the bridge. I loved the views of the mountains from my window and the access to the Hoover Dam Trail, which is right on the doorstep meaning I could easily walk to The Hoover Dam and back (20,000k steps) in a day. The views from the trail are exceptional, take water, food & sunscreen, the trail is well marked.
