Smithfield House welcomes the discerning traveler looking for peace and tranquility in the Platteland. Set within a five acre property the historic home offers the splendor of a bygone era with modern conveniences. The pressed steel ceilings, spacious rooms and a wide verandah are complemented by a large garden. The property is also home to alpacas, donkeys, sheep, goats, laying hens, ducks, geese, cats and a pack of Golden Retrievers. To allow guests choice, meals are not included in the room rates. Meals are served on the property on request and with prior arrangement. We are the safest accommodation in town as state of the art security has been installed on and around the property as well as in the house itself. This provides you peace of mind. You can sleep peacefully knowing you and your belongings are safe at all times. To ensure your stay is not negatively impacted on by loadshedding we have installed gas geysers and water is pumped from a tank when municipal water is not flowing. Each guest room is also provided with stand-by solar lighting.
Evidence of the owner being an avid mountaineer and traveler is evident in every room of the house. Because the owner is a keen gardener and animal rescuer the property offers an escape to a more slow-paced, gentle lifestyle. Travelers are invited to sit and read a book on the verandah, listen to the birds or at sunset watch the goats playing.
Established in 1848 Smithfield was established to serve the needs of farming community. With no railway passing through the town it has remained a small trading centre catering to the needs of a community of approximately 7 000 permanent inhabitants. Located 130 kilometres from Bloemfontein on the N6 route to the Eastern Cape or as an alternative passing instead though Bethulie to rejoin the N1 at the Gariep dam, Smithfield is an ideal stopover location. Activities available to travelers include mountain biking, hiking, golfing and canoeing. And if it is star gazing you are after, the night skies are spectacular!
