Guests can enjoy a complete Portland & Oregon experience at the John Barleycorn Home. The house and garden are ideal for families, friends and business travelers, with plenty of room (and rooms) to gather and relax. Located in the heart of inner Southeast’s Waverly Heights neighborhood, the John Barleycorn Home is just two blocks from Division Street’s best restaurants and shops, and three blocks from the ‘old Portland’ Clinton Street Corner. The location is ideal for exploring Portland's food and drink culture. Downtown is just 10 minutes away via Lyft/Uber or the frequent #2 Division Street bus. There are e-bike and scooter stations nearby. I like to think that my guests are ‘coming home’ when they stay here. The house is filled with warm family memories of food, music, stories, laughter, love and community. (And good drink, of course). I wanted to create a place where guests can experience all of this, relax & connect, and explore our lovely urban neighborhood and vibrant, eclectic city. I’ve been a SuperHost (on another short-term rental platform!) for seven consecutive years, with over 100 five star reviews. The John Barleycorn Home welcomes families and pets. There’s baby cribs, gates, chairs , strollers and baby baths available. And a dog station for the furry ones, with a fenced front and back yard. The house has a nice, easy flow to it, so it's perfect for small gatherings and reunions, getting stuff done or just taking it easy. No big parties (5 or more invited guests) or events, though...I like my neighbors! If here on business, the Portland convention center is just 10 minutes away by car or public transportation, and the house has a private office space, super-fast wifi with a dedicated guest network. The entire house, garden and all amenities are available. *(Your host lives in a basement apartment with a separate entrance, so won’t bother you!) Note:The two bedrooms with queen beds are on the second floor.
I'm a writer and published author about craft beer and spirits, mostly whisky. I managed the first brewpub in North America and created and managed the pub at BridgePort, Oregon's first craft brewery. Until the pandemic, I owned WhiskyBack Brewing, craft beers designed to pair with spirits. I currently write about whisky, Portland and Oregon, and am publishing an eclectic guidebook to the city, called 'The Portland Companion'. I own and operate the oldest whisky school in America: Ramsays Dram Academy of Whisky. Guests at the home can book whisky classes during their stay. They take place in the dining room and include three curated whiskies, a craft beer back and snacks. There's a slide presentation too. Choose from Scotch whisky; Bourbon & Rye or Oregon Whiskey. Other alcohol achievements: Kentucky Colonel and Keeper of the Quaich (Scotland) for my contributions (writing, not money!) to the Commonwealth of Kentucky and Scotland. I was voted 'Best Person to Drink with in Portland' by the Portland's weekly newspaper. In the course of 30 years living in Portland, I've founded and managed a competition bagpipe band, coached high school soccer, saved an elementary school from closing down and generally have enjoyed a lifetime exploring the culture and history of the Pacific Northwest, my adopted homeland. My original homeland is Scotland, and I have an affinity for that wee place, too. Most importantly, father and friend to two wonderful (grown up) children.
The John Barleycorn Home is in the Waverly Heights neighborhood in inner Southeast Portland. Just two blocks from Division Street and the Clinton Street Corner, home to many of Portland's best restaurants, bars and shops. The house is on Woodward Street, a quiet, safe street in a lovely, walkable neighborhood with eclectic houses and gardens. Plenty of parking and bike stations, and there's a kids pocket park a couple of blocks away, a nearby dog park, and organic grocery stores and coffee shops within walking distance. Waverly Heights was originally an Italian and German neighborhood...there's an old growth Western Red Cedar 3 blocks away where the neighbors gather to discuss important issues and events. The John Barleycorn Guest House is in a lovely walking neighborhood with trees galore. It's a couple of blocks to e-bike stations and bus stops. The buses run downtown every 12 minutes and it's a 10 minute journey to downtown Portland. Street parking is plentiful, and there's usually 2-3 spaces available in front of the house. A Lyft or Uber ride is typically 5 minutes from the house.
