Dammam is the largest and has a huge port, while Dhahran houses a huge mall and the headquarters of Saudi Aramco - the world’s largest oil company. The Ghawar Field – the world’s largest oil field – is south-west and there are smaller fields nearer the cities.

Lining the western edge of Al Khobar (or Al Khubar), this promenade passes palm-lined parks, a white mosque jutting into the sea, and a futuristic-looking water tower on a small island. The Corniche also backs sandy beaches with warm waters, though the best beaches are in Half Moon Bay.
This affluent city has no shortage of shops and popular Al Rashid Mall includes a children’s amusement area. The Giant Stores are also worth a look, even if just to see the gigantic shopping trolley out front.
