It's a properly rustic paradise area, away from the more fabricated hotel resorts. Lots of locals who know one another and it feels safe, if a little rough around the edges. It has its own cultural and geographical charm that seems to differentiate it from other parts of Mauritius. Lots of places to eat, a good supermarket - seems expensive for the area, but I think this is quite common. Good offers of boat hire to get over to Ile aux Benitiers, which is well worth it. La Gaulette does not have a beach and the sea there is ugly.
La Gaulette does not have a beach and the sea there is ugly. Le Morne (which is very close) is the only place nearby with a nice beach, but it is widely occupied by luxury hotels. another problem with La Gaulette is that it is not usable as a base for visiting Mauritius, becasue is far away from all main attractions except 7 color earth and Black River falls.Guest review byUgoBItaly - 8.0

Close to Le Morne and other attractions and places worth visiting, 90 min drive to Port Louis. Island is a paradise for botanical enthusiasts, hikers, climbers, fans of all sorts of water sports and beautiful reef fish, encounters with whales, dolphins etc.very friendly lovely locals and I felt very safe at all times, safer than in European many places. The apartment was really good, very clean, there was everything we needed for cooking. The view from the balcony was amazing, beautiful sunsets. Bianca was very available for us on whattsapp and was super helpful! Le morne public beach is only 10 minuts by car. There are supermarkets a few minutes away, And local resteurantes in a walking distance. The daily cleaning service was nice with a regular change of towels and bedlinen. Centrally situated in La Gaulette with a very nice restaurant (Eldorade) and shops within easy walking distance. The 'lonely' washing machine works well! The host was kind and replaced all kitchen appliances and other items that was not acceptable on arrival. You do need a car to get around in the area.
