Antananarivo is what it is. Which is to say dirty, dusty, noisy and overcrowded. Lots of beggars. Traffic moves at speed of molasses when it’s moving at all - there are no traffic lights, some intersections have traffic cops but they appear to be ignored. There are not many places to visit in Antananarivo and it is not recommended that you go out alone - particularly after dark. It was the start and end point of a wildlife tour for myself and my friend and the tour guide organised a walking tour for half a day which was very good. Without the guide, I think we would have struggled to find our way around and avoid the people begging for money and/or trying to pick our pockets!!Guest review bySusan - 8.0

Antananarivo is an old city mixed with vibrant culture. The people are humble. They are poor and live of the land. You find people washing clothes and bathing on the riverbanks. The slum area is terrible, dirty and everything is dumped into the river. A had the opportunity to visit a Hindu temple and the Queens palace, this is a must do as a tourist. There are modern buildings of international standards. Electricity cuts are constant. Food is inexpensive and good value and quality depending on where you are dining. Traffic congestion must be expected as the city centre is the hub full of street vendors. I would love to visit again and spend more time exploring the rest of Madagascar.Guest review byAnonymous
