Yes, it's touristy, but it's so particular with all its blue buildings, in the midst of beautiful nature, that it's a must. Be prepared to climb a few hills! Gorgeous city tucked into a hillside. We enjoyed the drive from Tangier. Fabulous city for photos (all the gorgeous shades of blue!). We took a cooking class at Cafe Clock - fun, intimate and we made tons of breads an pastries. For us 1.5 days was plenty of time to explore and enjoy. Chefchaouene can feel a bit like a Moroccan theme park. By day much of the medina is over taken by shops selling tourist mementos, a lot of shops selling similar items. I found that a little depressing but understood the need to make a livelihood from the beautiful surroundings. I found it worthwhile to get up early and walk the streets before all the merchandise obstructed the view of what we really came to see. Its a beautiful town to get lost in. Local people are generally very friendly & welcoming. Enjoyed getting bread from the traditional bakery. View from kasbah is wonderful. Town is full of cats. Some are healthy and well looked after, but there were a few that looked sick. It broke my heart. Taj Hotel Chefchouen is an oasis of tranquility just outside the city walls. All members of staff were so gracious and kind from the minute I arrived to the day I left. They were such special people that I wish them to know they will remain in my heart forever. When my guide never showed up to bring me around the old city, the hotel security guard offered to bring me instead and he was so cheerful. Never before in life have I experienced such generosity at a hotel. Staff were friendly and professional. The hotel sent a porter to the car park just outside of the Medina to meet us and help us with bags and to find the location (and they helped us back at the end of the stay). Breakfast was amazing and probably one of the best we had in Morocco. But the best was the spa. He sent us each a blue plastic flower as a welcoming surprise since the day we've checked in was the Mother's Day. And I indeed brought the flower back to China after my vocation in Morocco to my mom. He offered himself to locate all the must-see scenery spots and good restaurants on my google map so that we could find them easily. It indeed helped.
