By far the best thing about Little Hostel is Nok the owner. She is full of information not just about Huay Xai and the slow boat but the whole of Laos. She offers everything in an easy booking place (SIM card, slow boat, Pak Beng hotels, meals for the slow boat etc.) and she offers them all at the same price or just slightly above what you'd pay for going through the hassle of booking yourself. Her cooking is delicious and she makes everyone feel welcome. In terms of the hostel itself, it's a beautiful home, very centrally located, with a lovely space to hang out. The rooms are simple but everything is provided: towels, shower gel, a curtain for privacy on the bed, etc. There are only eight beds so I definitely recommend booking in advance especially the day before a slow boat departure.

The rooms were clean, all with a bathroom. It is in a great location right next door to the gibbon experience, opposite the main bank and close to the restaurants in town. The views over the Mekong are beautiful and there is a covered chill out area on the first floor. I could also book my onward travel from there and buy a SIM card.

We stayed in a big, spacious room with a great view on the city / stairs to the temple and on the river from the other side. The room and bathroom looked much better than the entrance hall.
