Travelled for work, have had many trips for 3-6 weeks in Malang this year. It is a lively city, very busy and densely packed. There are some good bars and restaurants for westerners to visit, it's worth asking around as places close and new ones open up so online guides aren't always accurate. Climate is always warm, either warm and dry, or warm and rainy! People are very friendly, and the cost of living is very cheap compared to western prices. Nice places to visit, but lack of infrastructure.
Nice places to visit, but lack of infrastructure. Mount Bromo, one of the best attractions is only reached by Jeeps, in fact, very old cars, no seat belt, no comfort at all, if you are more than 1.8 m tall, as me, you will be no room for your legs, and have to stary more than 5 hours like a sardine in a can.
