Echoes of the Age of Empires
Hvar is the largest city on the Croatian island of the same name within the Adriatic Sea. The wildly undulating coastline formed a natural harbour here, a fact which didn’t go unnoticed by the Venetians, who captured it as part of their empire. The Venetian Fortress sits atop a hill and 13th-century ramparts descend to the old town.
Another castle from Napoleonic times is on a different hill offering beautiful views over red roofs towards the offshore Pakleni islands sheltering the port. Ferries link Hvar to neighbouring Brač and Vis islands, Split and Ancona in Italy.
Given the size of the city, the amount of Hvar accommodation is staggering, and Booking.com offers everything from luxury hotels with pools to cheap guest houses and beachfront apartments. Although most beaches are rocky, their scenic setting and warm turquoise waters are still a draw.
At the heart of the city is the largest square in Dalmatia. Restaurants and bars spill out onto its cobbles, ending at St Stephen’s Cathedral with its see-through belltower. Around the same time the cathedral was going up, one of Europe’s oldest theatres was constructed in the waterfront Arsenal. The Loggia is the only remain of the Governor’s Palace, and the Hvar Heritage Museum helps to put all this in context.

Hvar centre is over priced and if you do not get recommendations where to eat you could end up paying a lot of money for poor quality meals. The island itself is beautiful and worth exploring on your on own. A beautiful harbour to walk around in the old town. Lovely swimming spots from the harbour walls as long as you are a swimmer. Tiny pebbly beaches by the Franciscan Monastry & Bonj Beach if you need to touch the bottom which are both walkable from the old town. The walk up to the Fortica Fortress is well worth it and not that intense if you are used to walking and steps. Overall a lovely vibe to Hvar very relaxed and safe. Hvar is a frequent island in Croata. This is what makes it overrated. First of all, the prices are so high and the value I got for it was way low. However the coast and the sight is amazing, the whole vibe is so boring. There are people with smartphones making insta photos but not smiling. They are spending money in an overrated and overpriced beach bar and getting drunk and that's all. At the most of the restaurants and bars there is not even music, no dance and no sing at all. The foods are below average, but the price labels are higher than any italian restaurant in Italy. And also Croatian authorities give fine unfairly. I was going because I was there long time ago and I remembered it is a good place, but comparing to South America, or any other Mediterranean country, it is just not worth the money.Guest review byGáborHungary - 10.0
Gorgeous Island.
Gorgeous Island. We hired a private boat for a day, which is a must. we also hired scooters and rode half the island, such a fun thing to do. All the beaches we visited were crystal clear waters. Stayed as two couples and this was beautiful central location run by a family, felt like I was staying at someone’s home. Communication excellent start to finish, met us at the port, and the tour organised through hotel for a boat trip was our favourite day in hvar! A must! Natalia also made as breakfast early specially on the last day due to catching an early ferry, nothing was too much trouble. Warm, clean, big rooms and amazing breakfast! Thank you so much! The pool area was really good- always beds available despite the hotel being very busy. Breakfast had a really good selection but due to being buffet style was always a bit cold unless you were lucky enough to get something as it just came out. The hotel rooms are traditionally deorated and spotlessly clean. The staff are all very friendly and helpful and there is a pretty restaurant and bar for meals and evening drinks.
