We only stayed in Fira before Island hopping. However, it is a stunning place to visit as we have done so on many occasions. You need to be pretty mobile as it's steep in places with lots of steps! Fira is a great place to stay in Santorini if you don’t have a car and it’s very central. From Fira you can get the local buses at a very cheap price to move around the Island and go to Oia and the beaches, it also has a cable car that you can go with it down to the old port of Fira. The last time I was in Santorini was 20 years ago and the evolution it has seen left me speechless. Over run with tourists crammed into the souvenir shop filled streets. Be prepared to walk and climb when you visit as its very hilly and can be challenging in the summer sun. Amazing place to visit and so pretty. Lots and lots and lots of shops, restaurants and bars. Quite expensive but bargains to be had off the main strips. Very busy in July especially when the 2 or 3 cruise ships come in but gets quieter at night.
