Very touristy in peak season, much more so than any other...
Very touristy in peak season, much more so than any other town we visited outside of Athens, It was filled with souvenir shops, clothes shops, tavernas, and ice cream shops, and difficult to find much else in between. For people who like the ease of having everything on your doorstep and being able to slowly meander along pretty shopping streets, it would be great. It is very easy to get around; a relatively compact town. The large parking area at the port can accommodate hundreds of cars so there was never any worry about not finding a space. There's a nice beach a short drive away (Karathona) and the city beach is fine if you don't have a car, albeit quite crowded. It was worth the climb up to the Palamidi fortress, for the views, but there are better days out all around: Mycenae, Corinth, and Epidaurus were all brilliant trips. Nafplio is a good base for exploring the eastern Peloponnese in general. Antica Gelateria di Roma is the most popular ice cream shop, and was very good, but we enjoyed all the others too. We were meeting my parents in Greece and were looking at which islands to go to for a few nights. Couldn't really decide and it was all getting a but expensive with the ferry. We then decided to go to the coast and picked Nafplio. I am really glad we did, Nafplio is a beautiful coastal town with a lovely town centre which is mostly pedestrianised. There is a nice little public beach in town but there are also some absolutely beautiful beaches within a 15 minute drive. Nafplio is a great place to visit.
Nafplio is a great place to visit. It is a beautiful town with many nearby historical sites to visit. Above the town of Nafplio is the Palamidi Fortress, a Venetian Castle from the early 1700's. On a small island right off the port is the Bourtzi Fortress, an old prison where the guillotine was used to execute prisoners. Also not far away are some UNESCO world heritage sites. Mycenae and Tiryns, from the 12 century. Don't miss seeing the Lion's Gate. My favorite is the Ancient Theatre at the Asklepieion of Epidaurus. Loved this little town.
Loved this little town. If you are visiting Greece and looking for a different trip than going to the Islands (or don't have time to go to an Island) Nafplio is a fantastic long weekend destination! The old town is adorable with cute walking streets filled with restaurants and shops. It's on the water with several beaches to access - one is walkable. There is a castle and historic sites to hike to. You can rent a boat from the marina for a day trip. The drive from Athens Airport is less than 2 hours and much easier than driving in Athens traffic. In over 50yrs of visiting Greece, Nafplio is one of my most favourite places to revisit. I have had a place in Athens for decades & it's only 2hrs away on the bus, so I've been quite a few times. Everything about it is beautiful -- the buildings (whether grand or cute), the cafes, the friendliness of the people, the whole atmosphere of the town -- it's like being on a island. And the 50mins walk along the coast to the huge Karathonas Beach is absolutely stunning. Stayed one night as a quick stop because we were traveling further south, but it would have been nice for 2 nights. Great area to jog around the area. Had beautiful paths with a great view of the sea. We jogged around these paths for an hour . It's also an excellent hike up the fortress steps.......beautiful scenery!! 3sixty has excellent steaks! Main pool heated, another colder, they give towels when you go to the pool. Really good homemade breakfast. Quiet place. Around 10min driving to Nafplio center (this town is the best in all Peloponese). Also only 10min driving to nice Karathonas beach. Big supermarket few minutes walking. Breakfast was amazing everyday . Owners were great very helpful and an absolute pleasure to deal with. Location is central to a lot of attractions, main town Nafplio and beaches very quiet and private but definitely need a car to get around .
