FAQs about hotels in York

England Through The Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

We loved walking round the city - a lovely mix of modern and old. The Shambles is interesting. The River cruise was very enjoyable and a reasonable price. We also enjoyed our walk round the city walls. We found some lovely restaurants but the best for us was Enoteca (family run Italian restaurant ) - the food , the service and the ambience were superb.

There is so much to see and do around the city with all of its historical sights with both old and modern shops. The Shambles and Shambles Market are a must visit. With lots of Quirky shops and cafes. Yorvik is a great place to visit, giving an insight into the past with a short gentle ride through the life of the early people of York. The Minster is an impressive building. And the bells at about 7pm are beautiful to hear. We will be going back to visit some of the things we missed oveer our mini break. Take your camera and be prepared to walk, there is so much to see.

If you get a chance , book for the Ghost Bus Tour that leaves from outside the Milner Hotel near York Railway Station, it is truly an hilarious ride/experience , we didn't stop laughing the whole time we were on the tour. Also take a trip out to the McArthur Glen Designer Outlet if you have a chance, you can snag some bargains. It is really easy to walk round York and there is plenty of public transport. We also took a trip to Dreamery Gardens on the outskirts of Stamford Bridge, this is also worth a visit

Locality great. Excellent base for the city centre. Short walking distance to the Shambles. Situated on a street full of bars, cafes and restaurants. Easy check in, simple instructions for gate and room codes. Friendly staff. On site parking. Warned about the narrow entrance for cars but we had no problem. Room Comfortable and clean. Aware of negative reviews but we weren't expecting the Ritz as it was considerably cheaper than other York hotels. We would definitely stay again.

Stayed here for a few days and a really good find. The Hotel was comfortable and staff where great. The breakfast was excellent and filled us up for the day. The Hotel is situated perfectly for the city, and was a short 5 minute walk to outskirts of the city centre. Would recommend the hotel and would definitely rebook here if we are lucky enough to revisit York.
