As the largest natural harbour in Europe you might imagine...

As the largest natural harbour in Europe you might imagine Poole to be a watery paradise - unfortunately it's very built up and you don't get a sense of the location from most of the town. However it's in easy reach (via the Sandbanks chain ferry) of the beautiful nature reserve of Studland bay, the Victorian resort of Swanage and the Dorset (jurassic) coastline stretching to the west. Not to mention Brownsea Island in the harbour. Sandbanks beach is clean and unspoilt with lifeguards on hand - and if you have the energy you can walk along the beach to Bournemouth. The New Forest is a stone's throw away and public transport via bus from Poole to the coast and inland is exceptionally good and easy to navigate.

The Quay was lovely with lots of individual character pubs.

The Quay was lovely with lots of individual character pubs. However, the road network, particularly in the vicinity of Poole Railway Station is an absolute shambles - and it's all new! Also, getting to Poole from M27/Southampton area is a disgrace. There is no outer ring-road for Bournemouth to take you round to Poole so you get stuck in the Ferndown area 'forever' The local council & Highways England need to get with this and sort it out.

We love Poole so can only be positive about it.

We love Poole so can only be positive about it. It’s a lovely place for walking or just strolling along the waterfront and flat everywhere. Plenty of good restaurants/cafes/pubs. A great place to explore the area, regular buses and of course lots of boat trips available too. We always have a meal in the Poole Arms - traditional pub with excellent food. We also discovered the Custom House on this visit and had a really lovely meal there. We found all staff anywhere we ate or drank to be very friendly and helpful.

    Poole has a great pier.

Poole has a great pier. When we arrived, which was a Thursday evening, we headed down to the pier and the place was buzzing with activity. Lots of restaurants and pubs. We took a harbor trip on a boat and really enjoyed that but most of the time we were with family and friends. Great town.

The only problem with Sandbanks is that it is a bit detached...

The only problem with Sandbanks is that it is a bit detached from both Poole town itself and Poole Quay. Luckily there are regular buses which pass the hotel, but the last one from Bournemouth is only at 19.10, so you can't come back very late from an evening meal there. There were not many places to eat nearby at a reasonable price, so we had to travel to eat.

The RNLI College is in a great location, near to the waterfront with plenty of restaurants etc. The staff were all friendly and welcoming and the room was perfect, very comfortable with lovely views across Poole Harbour. The restaurant gas good, sensibly priced and better value than most hotels; breakfast was fabulous, so much choice and delicious. Added to all of this, you are surrounded by history and information about the RNLI and contributing to the charity at the same time, All in all, the RNLI College exceeded our expectations.

The staff we're incredibly friendly and welcoming. The room was a large split level suit. It was clean and had great facilities. So whether you're using the hotel as a base or fancy a quiet night in you've got everything you need. Also, the pub below is friendly and they were flexible on when we could check out so didn't feel rushed. Located in the Old Town of Poole you get the best of the town and can travel anywhere with ease.
