A Walk Through History
Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.
The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.
Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.
In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.

Chester is a brilliant city with great shops, great choice of eating places, and pubs. Also a fantastic busking guitarist called Andy Martin. I really enjoyed the beauty of the city's distinctive architecture, and it was wonderful to be able to walk the city walls. The cathedral is beautiful, but I also particularly loved the church of St John the Baptist where I was lucky enough to attend a free lunchtime concert of piano music. I didn't eat out (except for pizza at the open air theatre production I went to see which was freshly cooked on site and very good) but there were lots of very tempting cafes and restaurants I'd love to explore on a longer visit. We stayed in a room to the rear of the building and it was very quiet which suited us. Tea and coffee facilities were available in the room, together with biscuits, crisps and a bottle of water which were much appreciated. Breakfast was a very short walk across the car park into the hotel building. Great choice and all food was great quality. Good coffee too.
