Rich History and Medieval Beauty
Bayeux is a medieval French town in the region of Lower Normandy, known for the 11th-century Bayeux Tapestry which depicts scenes from the conquest of England by William the Conquerer in 1066. Registered by UNESCO as ‘Memory of the World’, this historic tapestry is 70 metres long and gives us information about the way of life in the Middle Ages.
The Norman-Romanesque Notre Dame Cathedral has impressive stained glass windows, bas-relief sculptures and a crypt with 15th-century frescoes beneath its floor. Consecrated in 1077, this structure is the place where the Bayeux Tapestry was kept for about seven centuries.
Opened in 1864, the botanical garden of Bayeux, which is home to the popular Weeping Beech tree and about 400 more trees, is open daily for free. You can wander around the picturesque old part of the city or visit the vibrant city centre with the modern shops and restaurants.

A charming small town, brimming with history and interest. A good base for days out and excellent restaurants for dinner - but be sure to book ahead in August as very busy. Bayeux itself was amazing.
Bayeux itself was amazing. Got to the see the Festival of Lights at the Cathedral and visited the Bayeux Tapestry. The whole town is quaint, lively and walkable. Further afield is Mont St Michel which is absolutely incredible and definitely worth a visit. I took advantage of the museums and cathedral in Bayeux...
I took advantage of the museums and cathedral in Bayeux itself, but also it was a convenient point for tours of the D-Day beaches and Mont St. Michel. I also spent one afternoon in Caen. Probably best to get there by car as the town is served by trains, but no buses were in evidence. I traveled in late August and but for the closing of the Tapestry Museum in September, I probably would have enjoyed the town and site-seeing with fewer crowds outside of peak holiday season. This location was wonderful for touring Normandy and the beaches. Loved how easy Bayeux was to get around. There were great restaurants, museums, and the cathedral was fabulous. We loved the museum with the tapestries. Shopping was easy to find anything you wanted. We did an Overlords tour - the Band of Brothers. The BEST. Highly recommend.Guest review byElaineUnited States

The studio apartment is in the courtyard of a beautiful building with seating outside. Our hosts, Michael and Gilles, were very welcoming. Their English was much better than our French! The apartment is tastefully decorated and well equipped. The bed is comfortable, the little kitchen has everything needed for a short stay, and the bathroom has a good shower.
