An Ancient University Town with Fascinating Culture
In the south-west corner of Castile and Leon, the Spanish city of Salamanca is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe. Declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Old City is one of the most beautiful Renaissance cities in Europe.
Situated next to the border with Portugal, Salamanca has unique architecture including Romanesque, Gothic, Moorish, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. The Old Cathedral dates from the 12th-13th centuries and joined together with the 16th-century New Cathedral.
One of the most charming squares in Spain, Plaza Mayor is the heart of Salamanca and an excellent example of Baroque architecture. Enjoy a walk around the exterior terraces, savour an ice cream or relax in one of the picturesque restaurants.
Founded by King Alfonso IX in 1218, the University of Salamanca has more than 3,500 international students and teachers. Known for its Spanish courses for non-native speakers, the university houses a huge library with more than 150,000 invaluable volumes.

We stopped in Salamanca for one night on our way from Portugal to Santander and were delighted we did. Plaza Mayor was magical, beautifully lit up in the evening, and full of life, perfect for an aperitif before dinner in a side street. In just a few hours we explored the old town, the University, and the New Cathedral with its amazing stone carvings, even spotting the little astronaut hidden among the statues. The hotel we stayed in was right next to the main square, and had an exceptional hostess who did everything she could and was very helpful. The hotel is small and modest, but the place is cozy and inviting, and it's a shame we didn't stay longer. Salamanca is a stunning, walkable city filled with history, charm, and hidden gems. Allow at least a few days to explore everything it has to offer. Start at the Tourist Information Center—their app is surprisingly helpful. A "free" walking tour is a great way to get your bearings and learn about the city’s deep history. Don’t miss the Old and New Cathedrals, which are architecturally and historically fascinating. The Art Nouveau and Art Deco Museum (Casa Lis) is a standout—small but beautifully curated. Spend time wandering through the historic University buildings, and let yourself get lost among Salamanca’s many plazas, gardens, and religious buildings. You’ll stumble upon ornate palaces, charming museums, and amazing tapas bars around every corner. For something a bit more contemporary, take a walk through the Barrio del Oeste to see impressive and colorful street art—a cool contrast to the city’s golden sandstone architecture.
