The Colourful Soul of the Costa del Sol
The birthplace of Picasso is as colourful as an artist’s palette, from the deep blue of the Mediterranean Sea to the golden sun, which gives 300 days of sunshine per year. When the sun sets, the vibrant nightlife awakens and you’ll find your place amongst the youthful square of the old centre, the trendy bars of La Malagueta or on one of the terraces of Pedregalejo.
There's also rich history underneath the sun and fun. Alcazaba is a Moorish castle from the 11th century and just next to it are the remnants of a Roman Theatre. The white stone tower of the Malaga Cathedral rises up in the heart of the city centre, and offers an interesting respite from sun bathing on the magnificent and popular beaches.
A more modern history can be appreciated by visiting the birthplace of Picasso and a museum full of exhibitions by Malaga’s most famous resident. A more relaxed Spanish city than Madrid and Barcelona, Malaga is still the gateway to the Costa del Sol and the busy Malaga Airport is only 10 km from the centre of town.

Málaga is a great city destination. 3 days probably enough to be in the city although the eating and drinking options were huge for a longer stay. A week overall was perfect for us as we made a 2 day trip to Granada (easy train journey), a tour to El Caminito del Rey (Unmissable) and a day trip to Ronda and Setenil. Excellent Picasso museum (not the house, though that's interesting, but the gallery). But make sure to book a time slot. Upper floors of the Thyssen gallery are worthwhile, the lower floors less so. Lovely food, even if my favourite was actually food from Cadiz. Buzzy without being overcrowded in October, and still warm enough to swim. Good rail connections for a day trip to Cordoba or Seville. Loved strolling through the old town. We visited the castles, the Picasso museum and the port/ harbour. Need to research restaurants - we just picked somewhere in the tourist zone and it was awful. First time trip to Malaga - vibrant city with so much to see. Stayed two nights and managed to visit the market, port and beach on first day and Alcazaba and Gibralfaro castle on day two . Very walkable city and great local buses and local trains. Also well served by the two city stations. A great gateway to explore Andalucía by train - we have moved on to Ronda, Cordoba and Seville over a ten day total trip. Will definitely return for more.Guest review byAnonymous
