I had dreamt of visiting Dresden for some twenty years and...
I had dreamt of visiting Dresden for some twenty years and this summer as part of a two week stay in Germany my dream came true. And even better a very dear old friend joined me for the visit. The cityscape in the old town is breathtaking, from the Frauenkirche to the Zwinger. We lingered at the beautiful Procession of Princes…We got to see the remnants of a collapsed bridge (the ill-fated Carola bridge), as well as the beautiful Blue Wonder bridge. We saw monumental buildings and the tiny Schiller museum in green hills, tucked away from the city hustle and bustle. We visited a variety of wonderful museums (paintings new and old, porcelain Chinese and Meissen, royal treasures and Karl May, the latter complete with Winnetou humour!) We had delicious breakfasts at the charming Viennese Bakery just around the corner from the Albertinum (tasty food freshly made, in central but still quiet location, with friendly staff) and lovely early evening meals in the Neustadt, as well as in Radebeul on a terrace overlooking vineyards…we were lucky with the weather having just missed a debilitating heatwave and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. Allow for enough time in Dresden.
Allow for enough time in Dresden. The museums are amazing, especially the Grünes Gewölbe and the Türkische Cammer. Both contain things you won’t see anywhere else in Europe. I didn’t have enough time to visit the Albertinum, so that’s for another visit.
