FAQs about hotels in Canberra

Culture, Politics and Military Mix

A popular quiz question is: what’s the capital of Australia? If you answered Sydney or Melbourne then it’s time to discover the real answer – Canberra. With Parliament House at its core, Canberra fans out across both sides of Lake Burley Griffin to reveal a diverse mix of museums, restaurants and bars filled with curious tourists, political persons and public servants.

Canberra was created as a solution to Australia’s 2 largest cities squabbling over the right to become the national capital. The Limestone Plains region in New South Wales was chosen as the site for present day Canberra. It was a good choice for nature lovers as it is surrounded by bushland, mountain ranges and, more recently, wineries.

The National Gallery, National Museum and National Library of Australia highlight Canberra’s cultural riches. Other notable institutions to visit are the High Court of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive that stockpiles a collection of Australia’s early radio, television and film history.

The military also plays a significant role here with many training facilities for the army such as the Australian Defence Force Academy. An unforgettable experience is attending the Anzac Day Dawn service at The Australian War Memorial.

Australia’s cultural capital with a political punch has many hotels, motels and apartments on Booking.com for that city trip, business jaunt or family holiday.

Canberra is a great city for a long weekend.

Canberra is a great city for a long weekend. We visited the Art Gallery (Cezanne to Giacometti), the National Library (Livin' in the 70's), The Portrait Gallery and the National Museum of Australia. All were excellent. We ate a diverse range of foods, Ethiopian on Northbourne, Wilma's, Bicicletta, Maple & Clove. All were very good. Canberra is a special place to visit.

Free entry into the places we visited and some places also free parking. Lots to do and see and lovely walks. Loved the war memorial and afternoon Last post service. Had a fabulous guided tour and the guide was very knowledgeable. Had our own car and very easy to navigate around. Not much traffic in the inner city (which is where we stayed). Went to a fabulous Irish Pub and they had an (Irish music) jam session which was great (Tuesday night)

Canberra is a lovely place... when the weather works in your favour. Transport is super easy, bus stops everywhere and the roads are pretty good too! Roadworks, merge lanes and weird roundabouts (of where there are PLENTY) keep things reasonably interesting if you're driving, but it's not necessarily difficult to commute around. I would recommend NOT driving to the CBD. Parking SUCKS. Can HIGHLY recommend the War Memorial, and all the views in and around Telstra Tower. Black Mountain Peninsula is beautiful. Park there is awesome.

I went to the National Museum and the Royal Mint. Both were great to see, and fascinating. Parking at the museum can be a bit hard to get, and it was very hard to park at the mint. I would definitely come back to see both attractions. There is plenty to see and do, and I'll definitely have to come back to see some of the other attractions around the ACT.

There is always something happening in Canberra from high tea at Regatta Point or dinner at one of the many easy places to walk to in town. The museum’s have great exhibitions and walking along the lake is beautiful. You can catch a show or pop to a winery, everything is within reach.

A paradise for booklovers and museum crushers, not for a tourist. Compares to Sydney and Melbourne, Canberra is more political and lower key, so I think it's good and quiet place for learning and researching via National Library of Australia and plenty of national museums.

What stood out the best was our experiencing the most helpful staff, every single one of them, that we encountered throughout our entire six days! Never intrusive, Down-to-Earth, friendly, honest and authentic! This Ramada team provided us with prompt and thorough service! We felt comfortable throughout our stay, in every instance that we have had in our travels! We will consider return to this Ramada Hotel, next time we visit Canberra. Happy to recommend this place to others, at anytime!

Quality facilities, acceptable cleanness and really good location. Love the bed. And the lounge / library area which provides microwave. Good value for money. I lived in Kingston before, now living in Sydney and visiting for autumn season. Tried hotel hotel (now ovolo), Hyatt, Koorajong and some serviced apt, this one rates at top - it’s my first time living in this hotel and will come back.
