Buses from Cairns Central Station and the Freshwater Connection Station take tourists to the picturesque and tranquil Atherton Tablelands and Daintree National Park. Cairns Lagoon is a large man-made inlet overlooking the Coral Sea and is popular for swimming, picnics, a BBQ and sunbathing.

Cairns is lively and very touristy its ok Be prepared to be disappointed Mossman Gorge dont bother very controlled and you are not allowed to really walk they are not happy as it is through an indigenous community You are strongly encouraged to pay $15 to take a bus to the gorge In addition most of the areas visited are conveniently closed to the public for supposed your safety and repairs taking many months Examples Lake Placid Barron Gorge I grew up here came back to visit it is no longer free to walk around your own country The islands such as fitzroy not bad but again very crowded Its worth a look but be prepared to find it too crowded and commercialGuest review byAlfred - 10.0

Cairns is an excellent base for tourists visiting north Queensland. It is a convenient hub for transport to other parts of the area and it also has very good local transport. I love the lagoon on the waterfront and I enjoy swimming there. I also love walking on the promenade along the waterfront. You can see a wide range of shorebirds on the mudflats there - some of them are migratory birds which have flown thousands of kilometres to spend the summer there. The Botanic Gardens is fantastic and contains two excellent cafes and two information centres. Once a week there is a free bird-watching walk which I highly recommend. Behind the Botanic Gardens there are wonderful walks in natural forest and yet more great walks in the area opposite the gardens. Cairns itself is a very interesting place to wander around with lots of restaurants, a gallery, a museum and a weekly market. It hasn't been taken over by ugly high-rise buildings as has happened to so many cities. I always enjoy my time in Cairns.Guest review bySylviaAustralia - 8.0

Tours are great paranella park and kuranda are the 2 I recommend. There is plenty to do around cairns city. Muddies playground was just 5 minutes walk to the esplanade from where we stayed its more for younger children and there is a cafe next to it where you can order extra hot coffee.
