The cons are it's a SUPER touristed little town, feels very crowded to walk the streets through the downtown. It's a gem of a town, so I get why everyone comes here. We were here in early Sept and even then it was wildly busy - I can't imagine coming here in peak season in June/July. There is also very little vegan food available but we made it work (there's great grocery stores for non-dairy milk, cheese, bread, hummus, veg, etc). The pros are it is really a lovely place and if you leave the town to go hiking (highly recommend), it's a lot more peaceful and the views are just epic. There's waterfalls and lookouts, and paths along the river. The salt mine was closed for construction but that looked cool to checkout. Some of the shops downtown had good things to buy (wooden ornaments and figurines, all the salt you can want, soaps).Guest review byMeganUnited States - 10.0

We stayed in Hallstatt for 3 nights, using it as our base to explore the surrounding area. It was a good choice as the Boutique Hotel Strand we stayed in offers a panoramic view of the lake. It was so peaceful and tranquil sitting on the balcony and admiring the views. Staying in Hallstatt gave us the opportunity to explore the town in the early morning and late evening hours when it is less crowded with day-trip tourists. However, dinner options in Hallstatt were limited as most restaurants/hotels do not take reservations and also close early at 8pm or 9pm.Guest review byCheong KoonUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Bring cash!! Most places would not take the credit card. Also, plan to have your dinner early because nobody served food after 8pm, not on the 2 nights we were there (a Friday and Saturday!). Everything is beautiful in Hallstatt.
Everything is beautiful in Hallstatt. I liked the salt mine and the view from the top (Rudolf tower) is stunning. If you are a sport lover, there you can do hiking, you can bike around to see the beautiful landscape. Best to arrive by train - the scenery on the journey is lovely and the ferry into Hallstatt a real bonus - if the weather is good. A two night stay was perfect for us, time to thoroughly explore Hallstatt and take your time to enjoy the salt mine tour and fabulous views from the Welterbeblick. Everything is accessible on foot, eating out was fine but expensive and there are wonderful views around every corner. Not easy to get a 2 night booking in town, so need to plan ahead and May is a good time to visit with sunny days and not too busy.Guest review bySpokeshaveUnited Kingdom
