Durres is a city of contrast from the Roman ampitheater to the beach, pool and shopping. Tasting the fresh fish from one of the seafront restaurants is a must but make sure you also fill up on byrek and sufflaqe! Pelikan has lots of amazing cakes for sweet treats, Tropikal resort has an amazing pool you can use for the day (1000leke) and the market is a hidden gem for bargains. The bus from the beach at Plepa along to the city Center gets VERY busy but for 40leke saves the stress of driving and trying to park and everywhere is then just a short walk. I liked the town much more than I expected.
I liked the town much more than I expected. It’s a lively resort with cafés and restaurants along the sea, and the prices are quite reasonable. There were Albanian dances performed by groups invited by the hotels, with tourists encouraged to join in. There are many myths about Albania.
There are many myths about Albania. One thing is true - it's dirty. But not like India. It's just that it's still a time when you don't get fined for a cigarette butt. When you can smoke on the beach and walk your dog. When they don't look at you like you're a dumb white trash. It's a great country. Great people. And half the price of Montenegro. Want a deeper sea and a cleaner beach? Then you're down the country on the Ionian Sea. But there's a 20 euros a day beach place there too.Guest review byOlenaUkraine - 8.0
Albania is quite a dirty country.
Albania is quite a dirty country. So expect to find clean restaurants and taverns, but some garbage around the streets. The Beach in Durres is quite big, with lots of space for your own umbrella but also with lots of sunbeds to rent. The restaurants serve good food and at a quite low price, compared to other destinations. As its only April improvements were taking place (painting etc) a new bar restaurant had been built on the ground floor, and was being completed with modern soft furnishings being installed. This means that the rooftop bar/restaurant and pool will be purely for guests. The chef created traditional Albanian meals for us (not on the menu) which were delicious.
