JamboHouse Lamu is set in Lamu, 300 metres from Gallery Baraka, 500 metres from Lamu Museum, and 500 metres from 18th Century Swahili House Museum. I had an absolutely wonderful stay in Lamu! The location was incredibly accessible, making it easy to explore the area. Our host was fantastic — welcoming, attentive, and always ready to help with any requests. The property was ideally situated near local amenities, so everything we needed was just a short walk away. Plus, there were so many activities to enjoy, from scenic walks around the island to boat rides and exploring the rich history of the area. It was truly a memorable experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to visit Lamu!

Situated within 500 metres of Shela Beach and 200 metres of Mnarani House in Lamu, Jua House provides accommodation with seating area. The bed and breakfast features city views and a sun terrace. Beautiful hotel with the best breakfast in Lamu. Their fresh baked bread is famous. The staff were so wonderful and went above and beyond to look after guests and the rooms and shared spaces are beautifully styled and really comfortable. I spent a lot of time on the rooftop enjoying the view. I had 3 fans in my room which was great as I didn't get any of the cool breeze that came through the upper floors at night (I was on the lowest guest floor and facing another building).

Featuring a swimming pool and tropical gardens, Kijani Hotel is situated on the coast of Lamu Island, along the Indian Ocean. The décor comes with natural handmade furniture, lanterns and ornaments. Beautiful location in Shela village, stunning gardens around the hotel and a short walk to Shela Beach which goes on forever. The restaurant at Kijani is amazing, better than Peponi! Definitely have the Kijani Crab Curry!

Located 500 metres from Shela Beach and 200 metres from Mnarani House, Shiban House features accommodation in Shela. Featuring a shared kitchen, this property also provides guests with a sun terrace. The house and room were beautiful, great view, loads of cosy seating. Breakfest was excellent, Joseph and Pepe were simply lovely and made sure we got the most out our short stay.

Featuring a terrace with sea views, a private beach area and a garden, Mangrove House can be found in Lamu, close to Manda Beach and 600 metres from Mnarani House. Really beautiful. A haven of serenity and calm. Exceptionally kind and helpful staff. When food is requested and cooked to order it’s of higher quality than that in the luxury hotel along the beach.

Featuring an outdoor swimming pool, Banana House and Wellness Centre is located in Shela village, Lamu 2.7 km from Gallery Baraka. The property is set 2.8 km from Lamu Fort. It feels like a home away from home, the attention to detail and there was always someone to assist everytime when we needed it. We really enjoyed our stay.

This historical Arabian-style building is located in the UNESCO-listed town of Lamu. It is less than 300 metres from the seafront and 3 km from the white sandy beach. Gorgeous house with amazing swahili flair, lovely hosts. Seems like they contribute to the Lamu community in a big way, they are well known and loved with everyone I spoke to. Hotel staff will help you organize any outing you‘d like, I can recommend Dhow trips, but they also help with other activities (plus reasonable pricing recommendations). Eco friendly facilities and the breakfast is amazing with ingredients sourced almost exclusively from their own Lamu farm.

Umma House has a terrace and is situated in Lamu, within just 400 metres of Lamu Museum and 500 metres of Lamu Fort. Guests staying at this villa have access to a balcony. We had a truly memorable and amazing experience staying 4 nights & 5 days at Umma house. We had a warm and welcoming greeting from the staff Zeinab and Farid who were amazing. Zeinab stayed in contact the whole time and she booked all of our activities for us. We gave her a budget and what we wanted and she made sure everything was organised and that our stay was stress free so we could just focus on enjoying Lamu. On our last day she let us check out later at 1pm because our flight was at 2:55 which was amazing so we could enjoy our final houra. Farid is the young house keeper and he was exceptional. He did all of the house work including laundry, dishes, ironing, cleaning the house and pool everyday and he even went out to the markets to get our groceries. He was so friendly and we were able to go with him to the markets and he showed us around and was helpful with anything we needed. If he is there you can ask him to show you around and he is very enthusiastic to do whatever you need to make the most of your stay in Lamu. The house itself is beautiful and we spent a lot of time in the pool and on the rooftops for sunset drinks. There are lots of different areas in the house to relax including 3 different balconies / roof tops. The best bedroom in the house is located on the top floor which has a lot of stairs so may not be suitable for elderly or people who struggle getting up stairs. This didnt bother us though and we got used to it quickly, it is so worth it for the amazing big bedroom! Umma house is located in Lamu old town so you are bound to hear the mosques and prayers but it is a beautiful way to experience the true essence and culture of Lamu and the prayers only last 5-10 minutes at most. If you are easily disturbed by loud noises then maybe bring ear plugs but if you are genuinely interested in the rich culture of Lamu then it should not be a problem.

For a genuine and memorable Swahili experience in an iconic location, you must stay here. Barack and Tawfiq were the most generous of hosts, always available to assist with travel plans and share local knowledge.
