From the preserved streets of Old San Juan to the vibrant energy of Santurce, each area has its own character, pace and accommodation options. These neighbourhoods are also close together, easy to navigate and never far from the beach. Whether you're planning your first visit or returning to see more, this guide will help you decide where to stay in San Juan.

Old San Juan

Old San Juan is the city’s oldest neighbourhood, known for its pastel-coloured buildings, cobbled streets and forts. It’s the best area to stay in San Juan for anyone interested in history, sightseeing and heritage architecture. If you’re staying here, most major attractions are within walking distance of local hotels and attractions, making it easy to explore on foot. You’ll find plazas with cafés and live music, art galleries and rooftop terraces with sunset views over the bay.

Appreciate the history of Paseo de la Princesa

This elegant 19th‑century waterfront promenade in Old San Juan features Victorian lamps, gardens and sculptures, including the expressive Fuente Raíces (Roots Fountain). Take a walking tour and enjoy the panoramic views of the San Juan Bay.

At the end of a cobbled pedestrian lane, the tiny Capilla del Cristo holds 18th‑century artworks and religious relics, making it one of Puerto Rico’s most photographed cultural icons. Locals and visitors stop here for a glimpse into the island’s deep-rooted history.
